On February 11, the first machines in Hewlett-Packard’s new high-speed inkjet Officejet Pro X line hit the market. HP claims the machines can print at up to twice the speed and at half the cost of laser devices. Included in the launch are two new single-function color printers, the Officejet Pro X451dn and X551dw, and two MFPs, the X476dn and X576dw. The X451dn and X476dn are capable of printing black-and-white and color documents at up to 55 ppm in draft mode, and the X551dw and X576dw can reach 70 ppm, making them HP’s fastest desktop inkjets to date.

Dear Charlie,
Great review of HP’s Officejet X ink jet printer series! However, in your cost per page calculation there is no comparision of the relatively low cost of “plain” papers that can be used in any laser printer versus the elevated cost of HP’s ColorLokl® grade. As I understand the ink jet printing process, the liquid droplets are prone to sink into a plain paper substrate, thereby losing image density and resolution because the droplet spreads laterally as it penetrates the fibrous sheet.
Therefore, a coated or treated sheet, such as ColorLokl® would seem essential to achieve maximum image density and resolution with the Officejet X printer. Is the added cost of a specialty paper, such as ColorLokl® a factor in the cost per page calculation?

Hi Art–
I’m not sure that the new Series X machines require ColorLok sheets. I suspect that the image quality would be improved with ColorLok papers but I think the machines work with traditional copier papers too.
I’m sure we’ll have more information about the Series X line as the machines roll out. Keep an eye on our site!
Thanks,
C
