Last week, Ricoh USA launched the SP 8400DN, a new high-speed, high-volume A3 monochrome laser printer.
The SP 8400DN replaces the Aficio SP 8300DN from 2013 (see “Ricoh Announces A3 Monochrome Laser Printer for Print-for-Pay”). Roderick Negron, product marketing manager for Ricoh USA, tells us that the new SP 8400DN is based on the same Ricoh print engine developed for the MP 4055 and MP 6055 A3 monochrome MFPs, which were announced in February 2017 (see “Ricoh Introduces Six New A3 Monochrome MFPs”).
The SP 8400DN features numerous improvements over the Aficio SP 8300DN. Key enhancements include a boost in print speed from 50 ppm to 60 ppm and support for a true 1,200 × 1,200 dpi print resolution (the previous unit could print at 600 × 600 dpi). The SP 8400DN also uses a more powerful 1.46 GHz controller architecture with “dozens of new workflow tools and enhancements.” The new printer has greater standard and maximum memory capacity and supports a larger optional hard disk drive. Whereas the Aficio SP 8300DN had a 4.3-inch color touch screen, the new SP 8400DN features Ricoh’s latest-generation 10.1-inch color Smart Operation Panel featuring Ricoh’s Workstyle Innovation Technology platform, enabling users to download apps to customize their device and automate time-consuming workflows.
The SP 8400DN boasts standard and maximum paper input of 1,200 and 4,700 sheets, respectively, up from 1,200 and 4,400 sheets on the Aficio SP 8300DN. The new monochrome laser printer also supports heavier media weights of up to 300 gsm from all paper trays. The new printer supports new finishing options, including a 1,000-sheet hybrid finisher, an internal multi-folding unit, and a 4-bin mailbox. Ricoh also notes that the new printer features real-time paper jam animations with corresponding internal LEDs.
Other enhancements are improved mobile printing support including NFC touch-to-print, optional NFC for ID card swiping and user authentication, an optional attention light for visual status in loud environments, PostScript 3 and PDF Direct Print emulations, and reduced energy consumption.
Specifications for the new SP 8400DN are shown below. The SP 8400DN is available now for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $3,059.
The imaging consumables for the SP 8400DN are all new, although Mr. Negron notes the toner formulation itself is now new. The toner is presumably the same formulation used in the MP 2555/3055/3555/4055/5055/6055 series.
Toner yields have been improved significantly from one generation to the next. Whereas the Aficio SP 8300DN used a 36,000-page toner cartridge, the new SP 8400DN uses the new SP 8400A toner cartridge, which delivers 51,000 pages. There is also a maintenance kit that includes a replacement drum, transfer unit, and waste-toner bottle rated at 160,000 pages and a fuser maintenance kit rated at 320,000 pages. Ricoh did not provide MSRPs for the consumables.
